Warrior
Let me preface this by saying I do not in any way like MMA and if I described this movie to you, you would call it preposterous.  I really enjoyed this movie.  To say it was effective would be a bit of an understatement.  The method of storytelling and revelation of the characters stories and motivations is really well crafted.  It seems like every decision the filmmakers made was the correct...

Taco Bell
Somehow Taco Bell you managed to combine my Taco Bell List with my #6 on the Worst People in the Word List.  By tailoring your business choices to things I despise you have assured we will never cross paths.  Well done.  My Taco Bell list originated when I said to myself, “Self, you know there is no reason to ever go to Taco Bell again.” (And I hate the d-bag in the new triple steak Taco Bell ad...

2011 music
The following is a list of music I listened to over the past year and generally liked.  Again, these may not all be 2011 albums, just things I found over the past year.   In no particular order: Emeralds - Does it look like i’m here Fang Island - Fang Island Beach House - Teen Dream Mogwai - Hardcore will never die but you will Drive-By Truckers - Go-Go Boots Little Boots- Hands Pains of...

Revisionist History?
I was looking at metacritic’s top scores for current music releases.  The top10  albums on the list (with one exception) are all reissues of older music of some type.  There is no way these were all universally hailed upon initial release.  As an example Siamese Dream did not receive perfect 10 out of 10 scores the first time it went through reviews in 1993.  I’m just curious what...

Goodbye R.E.M.
So R.E.M. broke up today, a decade+ after they said they would.  They were my first favorite band.  They sound tracked my high school years, my family’s move to Columbus and college.  Automatic for the People is the first album I bought at midnight.  (Remember when they used to do that?)  My wife and I were introduced by “It’s the End of the World…” at our wedding...

New Florida Gun Bill will not allow doctors to ask...
There is so much in this article that makes my blood boil.  The reason this is happening is fairly obvious, but still. NRA lobbyists helped write a bill that largely bans health professionals from asking about guns. (Marion) Hammer says she and other NRA members consider the questions an intrusion on their Second Amendment rights. Asking parents questions about gun safety is NOT an infringement...

It worked Sarah!
So Skynet did not become self aware on April 19, 2011.  Thanks Sarah. Probably a good thing that Google and Steve Jobs have been distracted with making smart phones, however. And for no particular reason (HT Bosak)

When Carlos Boozer was Prince's landlord
“Supposedly, Prince changed the front gate to the Prince sign, he changed the master bedroom to a hair salon, he changed the streaming blue waters that led to the front door to purple water, he knocked out walls, he changed the molding on top of the ceiling. Booz was livid. So pissed off, so angry … He put his Purple Rain stamp on it … Booz was like, ‘I was getting ready to...

The madness is coming...
from elevenwarriors “By comparison, the NCAA tournament is sheer anarchy. Sixty-five eight teams, many of whom don’t even share a common opponent, face off with almost no time to prepare. Whereas the conference schedule provides stability, continuity, and predictability; the tournament schedule is a hectic maelstrom of upsets, meltdowns, cinderellas, and an ever-present sense of...

Should I be aghast?
“Do you realize two United States senators — along with about 35,000 others, from the sound of it — had to stand in line outside the stadium for at least two hours before the game?” Peter King, MMQB Peter, US senators attending the Super Bowl should probably have to deal with everything the PEOPLE THEY SERVE have to deal with.

In an interesting twist of fate, newly-appointed Smashing Pumpkins bassist Nicole Fiorentino has admitted to being one of the two girls on the cover of Siamese Dream. A former member of Spinnerette and Veruca Salt, the 31 year-old musician says she was initially reluctant to tell Billy Corgan the news, fearing that he wouldn’t let her join the group. First World Problems
I have to call to complain about my recycling not being picked up for a second time since we went to single stream recycling a few weeks ago.  I was actually really irritated, but reminded myself this is a first world problem.  This reminded me of another recent first world problem that occurred at my parents house.  I’ll just paraphrase my mom “Can you get the shrimp ring out of the...

I did not know this
Leonard Skinner, the Florida-based gym teacher who inspired Lynyrd Skynyrd’s name, died yesterday morning at the age of 77. Skinner, who taught several of the Skynyrd bandmates during their high school years, was a notorious stickler for the school’s policy against long hair, often sending his students the principal’s office for violating the rules. How about a little extra dementia?
So the NFL wants to go to 18 games.  Right before labor negotiations.   Do the owners use the extra two games as a negotiatiating tool?  Is that why its being brought up now?  They want to force the players to negotiate for their health.  Dispicable.  The players do not want this for very good reasons.  Two more games expose them to the multitude of hits and impacts that lead to long term health...

I remember...
when R.E.M. said they were going to break up on New Year’s Eve right before the year 2000.  That was back when I was a huge fan.  I really didn’t want that to happen.  Why can’t they just keep making their music forever, I thought? So here it is 2010 and my favorite band in the world at one point is finishing up a new album for 2011.  Imagine if I told myself in 1993 that REM in...
